CryptoKitties is more than a standard game: it combines gaming with cryptocurrency and millions of dollars. With CryptoKitties, users can breed, collect, and trade digital cats with Ethereum-based smart contracts. CryptoKitties is one of the first blockchain games in the world with an estimated $12 million in sales. According to some reports, rare cats in the game have been sold for more than $100,000.
Cryptokitties are generated with code and bred using purchased Ether tokens on smart contracts that use two base cats to breed a new cat. Every cat created in the game is unique and record on the public ledger. As with Bitcoin and Ethereum itself, the game allows for speculation and investment. Want to get started on CryptoKitties? Here’s how to do it.
How to Get Started With CryptoKitties
Before playing CryptoKitties, you need to buy Ether and put it in a digital wallet that works as a Chrome browser extension. MetaMask is the most popular option as it allows you to interact with apps like CryptoKitties. You will need at least enough Ether to perform a transaction such as buying your first kitty.
With a loaded wallet, the next step is signing up for an account on the CryptoKitties website. With MetaMask unlocked and connected to the main Ethereum network, you can buy, sell, and trade cats.
With everything set up, you’re ready to get started. There isn’t much to CryptoKitties that resembles a traditional game as you mostly just buy, sell, breed, and rent out your kitties. The trick is determining which traits are rare and learning how to acquire them.
The first step is buying your first cat or two, if you want to breed them. Go to the Marketplace and click “buy now” when you find a cat you want to buy. MetaMask will prompt you to confirm the transaction. If you aren’t interested in any kitties on the Marketplace, you can also buy a Gen 0 kitty every 15 minutes.
When choosing a kitty, pay attention to its attributes. Along with a dozen different traits, each cat has a cooldown and a generation number. The generation number refers to how many generations the cat is removed from a Gen 0 cat, which are introduced every 15 minutes. The higher the generation number, the lower the long-term performance and value of the kitty. The cooldown metric ranges from fast to catatonic and tells you how much time the cat needs after giving birth to breed again.
To get new offspring, you can breed an existing kitty with a siring partner in the siring section or another kitty you own. During breeding, your offspring’s appearance and attributes will be determined by the parent’s 256-bit genome and chance. The breeding process will cost Ether, but the offspring can be kept or sold in the Marketplace at a price you choose.
Going forward, remember that other users can claim anything they like about the cats. Always reference the CryptoKittydex to verify if a trait is common or not.
